A Christmas Lament

June 3, 2015

A young editor I once met at a party where we made gingerbread houses (Brooklyn is so weird) emailed me the following, when I reminded her of our initial introduction:

(Man, gingerbread houses: I could really go for one of those right about now.)
(Although, you know, what a tragedy they are, ultimately. Right? Like sand castles. Or sand mandalas. Anything made out of sand, basically.)
(And is all of that stuff actually edible?)
(Like, isn’t there glue and stuff, usually? I seem to remember this from childhood. You’d spend all afternoon building a g’bread house and then the teacher-type-person would be all, No, don’t eat it—it’s just for decoration. Which is like, teacher-type-person, have you ever met a child? I mean, seriously.)
(Forget it. Gingerbread houses are clearly the worst.)

What Not to Do

November 21, 2014

I mean, I actually did find Rebecca Mead’s book One Perfect Day: The Selling of the American Wedding fascinating and not at all damaging to my enthusiasm, but still, I wouldn’t exactly RECOMMEND that a person read it while engaged.

“What are the forces that are contributing to this increase in wedding pressure, not just among so-called Bridezillas, but among all American brides and grooms?  And what is the significance––beyond the impact on the purses and personalities of marrying couples, their friends, and their families––of the escalation of the American wedding?  What, in other words, does the American wedding tell us about the rest of American life?  It was questions such as these that propelled the writing of this book, as well as a hunch that some answers might be found not by looking at the grotesque behavior of a handful of individuals, from whose excesses an amusing but ultimately trivial tale might be wrought, but by looking at the larger context––at the wedding culture in which those individuals are immersed.”

“When I’d become a regular at the shop, [Shabtai, the owner] invited me to sit with him and have horrible coffee and stale cookies––this was a major step forward in our relationship.  From there, he started to ask me to watch the shop while he… it wasn’t clear exactly what he was doing.  It seemed he had other business in the market, possibly involving certain female acquaintances.  He had a serious flirtation going with the chain smoking lady who sold dish rags and mops.

During my time as deputy junk man, I got to know the shop regulars.  The cabbie who would come in after his shift in search of radios and call me “sweetie”––which, in Hebrew, is considered a macho thing for men to call each other––and would inevitably begin speechifying and tell me that when I returned to the US, I should ‘tell the Americans’ whatever slightly frightening political opinion he happened to hold that day.  There was a very old, very pious woman who inspected every item with Orthodox exactitude and usually ended up buying her grandson a coin from a distant, long-obsolete country.  Sometimes, I would end up watching the shop for a few hours––but I didn’t care.  For better or, more likely, for worse, minding a junk emporium in the Jerusalem outdoor market was kind of a dream job for me.”

So Apparently

August 17, 2014

I guess it will be not that surprising to people who know me that I got sucked into a bit of a k-hole today reading the last statements of criminals about to be executed in Texas.  Oh, Texas––that bastion of bureaucratic productivity!  Thank you ever so much for being so organized in your effort to let the public see what those poor suckers you’re offing have to say!  Perhaps my favorite is Michael Yowell’s, because he takes the opportunity to call out his friend (?) Gerald for being a “zero.”  Also I really enjoy Caroll Parr’s, because she takes the opportunity to quote The Terminator.  But mostly, they are really harrowing (“I’m an innocent man. I did not kill anyone. Ya’ll are killing an innocent man. My left arm is killing me. It hurts bad.” ––Jonathan Green) or predictable (“I am going home to be with Jesus. Keep the faith,” says Kimberly McCarthy) or heartbreaking (“Can you hear me? Did I ever tell you, you have dad’s eyes? I’ve noticed that in the last couple of days”: Ramon Torres Hernandez ) or intriguing (Last statement of Douglas Alan Feldman: “I hereby declare, Robert Steven Everett and Nicholas Velasquez, guilty of crimes against me, Douglas Alan Feldman. Either by fact or by proxy, I find them both guilty. I hereby sentence both of them to death, which I carried out in August 1998. As of that time, the State of Texas has been holding me illegally in confinement and by force for 15 years. I hereby protest my pending execution and demand immediate relief.”)  For your Monday morning: YOU’RE WELCOME.

Horoscope

June 18, 2014

Apparently, the Post thinks this is what’s going on for me today:

“Even if you are the kind of Taurus who keeps your emotions under control you will be much more outgoing than usual today. There are so many good things going on in your life that you’ve got to stand up and tell the whole world.”

Have they not been outside yet?!  Nothing good can happen in this heat.
